The Date

We had gone to see a movie,
and then to a place to eat.
"I'm feeling kinda hungry," I said,
as we sat down for our treat.
'Course I didn't know 'till later,
I had scared him, with what I'd said.
Though I knew that something troubled him,
for his face--it turned bright red.
When I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich,
he relaxed. quite visibly.
I guess he thought that I'd meant 'starved',
and he couldn't afford the fee.
He didn't make much money.
His pay was really low.
He couldn't afford a three course meal,
my brand new Navy beau.
